Kayser's first major acting role was in the 1985 comedy film Hot Chili, in which he played a character named Jason. In 1986, he appeared as Brad in the horror comedy Night of the Creeps.

In 1986, Kayser got the role of Bubba Higgins on the sitcom Mama's Family. He appeared on the show for 6 seasons and a total of 95 episodes between the years 1983 and 1990. This earned him a nomination for Best Young Guest Actor in a Drama or Comedy Series at the 1989 Young Artist Awards.

Kayser guest-starred on several game shows from 1980 to 1987, namely "The $25,000 Pyramid," The New Hollywood Squares, and "The $100,000 Pyramid," among others. He also appeared on the 1997 television movie "Journey of the Heart".
