Atletico Madrid Upsets Real Madrid To Win La Liga Title

Luis Suarez scores to help Atletico clinch the league after seven years.

Both city rivals were in action on Saturday evening's last league match. Going into their respective matches, Atletico was top of the league table, followed by Real, who was only two points behind them.

Therefore, the last day was what would decide who will be crowned the champion. And it could not have been more dramatic than this.

Real played Villareal while Atletico played relegation-threatened Real Valladolid. Real was playing at home while Atletic played away from home. And as it was the league's final match, almost every game was played simultaneously.

It was not a good first half from Diego Simeone's men who conceded in just the 18th minute of the match. At the break, it looked Simeone had to inspire his team if they want to win the league.

In the other match, Real was also not doing better than their city rival as they too were trailing by a goal down when Yeremi Pino scored for Villareal in the 20th minute.
Zinedine Zidane's men had to win the game at all cost if they hoped to lift the coveted cup second year in a row.

The second half turned out to be an intense 45 minutes for both teams. It looked like Simeone pumped up his players as the Colchoneros leveled it through Angel Correa in the 57th minute of the game. Now they needed only one goal to secure the cup; however, Valladolid did not make it easy for the last season's La Liga holder.

In fact, Valladolid, owned by the Brazilian and Real legend Ronaldo, came close on a few occasions to take the lead. Finally, in the 67th minute, Luis Suarez Atletico got their breakthrough after Suarez collected Valladolid's Sergio Guardiola's miss pass from the halfway line and sprinted with the ball before finishing with his left-foot inside the bottom left corner.

It was a nervy feeling for the next twenty-five minutes as Real made a comeback very late into the game. Striker Karim Benzema equalized in the 87th minute, and Luca Modric completed the comeback netting in the stoppage time.

As Real lead against the Yellow Submarine, Atletico had to win at any cost if they were to win the title. And for that, they had to defend well for the next few minutes, which they did, and when the referee blew the final whistle, everybody in the red and white stripes burst in tears of joy and celebrated.

Atletico Madrid is the La Liga champions of the 2020/21 season. The last time Diego Simeone's men won the Spanish cup was in the 2013/14 campaign.

Congratulations to Atletico de Madrid for securing the Spanish title. Few would argue that they have not deserved it this season!

Elsewhere, Barcelona won their match against Eibar with the only goal coming from Antoine Griezmann in the 81st minute. Barca, who was without Lionel Messi for the last matchday, finished the league in the third position.
