England had not beaten Germany in a knockout game in a major tournament since 1966, the year they won the World Cup. Since then, Germany was always on the front foot during their matches.

For manager Gareth Southgate, it was also a redemption as he had missed a penalty as a player in Euro 1996 semifinal at Wembley against the same opponent. That knocked out England out of the competition and also marked the beginning of the rivalry between the two footballing nations.

About 45,000 fans were present at Wembley to behold the famous victory of England. An electric atmosphere surrounded the game, and it was delightful to hear the crowd noise and cheering as Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane scored for the Three Lions.

Sterling scored the opener at the 75th minute of the game as he tapped in a cross from Luke Shaw into the back of the net behind Manuel Neuer. The second goal came in the 86th minute when Kane headed an incredible cross made by Jack Grealish into the back of the net.
