EURO 2020: France Suffers Shock Exit As Switzerland Prevail in Penalty Shootout

The Red Crosses have knocked out the world champions.

It is the biggest shock of EURO 2020, so far-World Champions France are out of the tournament. Switzerland came on top after giving a more than impressive performance.

France, who was the EURO favorite for many, were subdued by the resilient Switzerland team. The 2018 World Cup winners were stunned by their opponent after Haris Seferovic scored a header in just the 15th minute.

Switzerland continued their impressive display in the second half, too, and kept the pressure on their opposition and were rewarded with a penalty after Benjamin Pavard brought down Steven Zuber inside the box.

Surprisingly, Ricardo Rodriguez, who had missed about 50 percent of his previous goals from the spot, stepped up to take the shot from the 12 yards out. He missed, and Switzerland wasted a vital opportunity to double their lead.

It didn't take long as only two minutes later, Karim Benzema equalized for France. After two minutes from that goal, Benzema again scored to put France in the lead for the first time in the night.

Paul Pogba then showed his skill by hitting a spectacular long-range curler in the top right corner in the 75th minute. At that point, all the odds for Switzerland to catch up to France seemed impossible.

However, Seferovic scored yet another header to give his side some hope for a comeback. From then on, Switzerland were relentless, and it felt like they could do something special. And for the second time in the night, a team came from two goals down to level in the stoppage time.

Since the beginning of the extra time, it seemed like Switzerland's plan was to take it to the penalty shootout. Thankfully for them, that tactic worked out this time.

Switzerland won the toss, and captain Granit Xhaka chose for his team to go first. Nine players scored from the spot, and the final taker was Kylian Mbappe. Yann Sommer saved his shot, and to the surprise of many, Switzerland progressed to the quarterfinals and deservedly so.
