Kelly Marie Tran was a welcome surprise in 2017 when the movie 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' was released. The actress was relatively unknown when she was hired to be one of the characters in the second movie of the sequel trilogy. Before her hiring, in the beloved saga, the actress only appeared in a handful of movies and TV shows, but 'The Last Jedi' was the reason she rose to fame.
The actress played the character of 'Rose Tico' in the film; her character was a rebel mechanic whose sister dies during the initial bombing of the First Order Dreadnought. 'Rose' is first introduced to us when Finn tries to get off the escaping 'Rebel' ship, and she stuns him, so he does not leave the 'Resistance.'

'Rose' was one of the bright spots when it comes to what transpired in 'The Last Jedi.' She was the first woman of color or minority actress to appear as a leading character in the 'Star Wars' franchise. But the negative reception of the movie by the fans spilled into hate and racist attacks against the actress.

After the movie was released, there was a wide gap among fans who loved the movie and the ones who hated it. The main reason for the divide was the way the beloved character of 'Luke Skywalker' was portrayed in the film. But there were also people who could not get the reasoning behind the side quest of the casino planet during the climax of the film.
There were some problems with the casino planet in the movie; first, the whole thing could’ve been cut, and it would make no difference and second, there was no real impact made to the final plot of the movie because what they went to recover in the planet was useless in the end anyway. So, we understand the qualms with the quest, but it should be it, the decision was of people who made the movie to include the scenes and not the actors.

Actors get the script, they learn their lines and act out the scene, they are not asked for inputs on the script and whether they think the scene will impact the overall movie or not. So, the people angry with the scene should aim their fury at the people who made the movie, but instead, they picked on the minority woman who was relatively unknown to the point and harassed her endlessly.
The actress's looks, appearance, weight, height, ethnicity, everything was criticized with the actress deleting all her Instagram photos because of all the harassment she was facing. People came to her aid, but the damage was done, Kelly said later on, after all the assaults she started to believe what the people were saying about her.
It was difficult for her, but she managed to pull herself out of the slump and is now back playing 'Rose' in the final 'Skywalker' saga movie 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' releasing on 20 December 2019.

Kelly Marie Tran's weight loss is becoming a talking point as 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' is nearing release. The actress, with her chubby cheeks and optimistic outlook on everything, was a welcome distraction in 'The Last Jedi,' but the pictures we’ve seen on the blue carpet during the premiere of ninth 'Skywalker' saga movie shows the actress losing a few pounds.
The cheeks are a little less pronounced, and from the premiere image of 2017 to now, there seems to be a slight difference in the appearance of the actress.
