After her low-key romance with McBeal, Liu dated Zach Helm, which became her best-known relationship. The couple announced their engagement in 2004 but eventually parted ways. She said she doesn't want to settle for anything else in 'InStyle' magazine. She said that love should be like lightning, and it happens almost immediately for her. The former twosome was engaged for five months and dated each other for two years after getting together in 2002.

The multiple Emmy-nominated actress has often been rumored to be bisexual. And believe it or not, the speculations started from Liu's comments. The actress once hinted at her sexuality. "Everybody wants to label people. Sometimes you just fall in love with somebody and you're really not thinking about what gender or whatever they happened to be," said the actress.

Liu learned to speak Mandarin at home and started to study English when she was five. When she was young, she studied the martial art Kali-eskrima-silat as a hobby.
