Star Wars 9: No Romance between Poe and Finn in The Rise of Skywalker, says J.J. Abrams

The possible romance between Poe and Finn will not be explored further in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, according to the director.

'Star Wars' is mere days away from the conclusion of the four-decade-long Skywalker saga. Something which will call the curtain on a series started back in 1977 with the now beloved and classic 'A New Hope.' 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' is said to be the end of all things 'Skywalker,' and with the movie just 16 days away, the team is making the press rounds to promote the film.

J.J. Abrams directed the movie; he also said he is taking more risks, and he was on the promotional tour for the film when he got to talking with Variety. He was speaking about whole hosts of things, and then the topic turned to the two new characters J.J. introduced in the first movie of the sequel trilogy, 'Finn' and 'Poe.'

Out of all the characters introduced since the new trilogy of movies started, 'Finn' and 'Poe' are the fan favorites. There is also a good reason why the two are lumped together in all the conversations. When The Force Awakens started, we were introduced to 'Poe' as he was being tortured by 'Kylo Ren.'

Then for the first time in Star Wars history, we see a Stormtrooper take the helmet off in a live-action movie. 'Finn' was the one we saw with his helmet off, and then he was seen as the weak link, and he also just saw the destruction of a whole village. He could not be a part of something like that, so he helps 'Poe' escape his capture.

On the way down to Jakku, the TIE fighter crashes, and 'Finn' thinks 'Poe' is dead and decides to wear the jacket. From the first time the two met, there was some connection between the two, and we all felt it. When the two characters meet again, and 'Finn' tries to give back the jacket he took from 'Poe,' he tells him to keep it, and it looked better on 'Finn.' 'Poe' was obviously flirting, 'Finn' knew it, the audience knew it, and the writers knew what they were doing.

But it seems the two will be getting their romance on, in the final movie, according to J.J. Abrams. “That relationship to me is a far deeper one than a romantic one,” the director said. “It is a deep bond that these two have, not just because of the trial by fire in which they met, but also because of their willingness to be as intimate as they are, as afraid as they, as unsure as they are, and still be bold, and still be daring and brave.”

It seems the LGBTQ moment on 'Star Wars' is not happening when it comes to 'Poe' and 'Finn,' but the director continued, and there seems to be some other way they are representing the LGBTQ community. “And in the case of the LGBTQ community, it was important to me that people who go to see this movie feel that they’re being represented in the film,” J.J. said.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be a true test when it comes to seeing if the people are suffering from Star Wars fatigue or not. But all signs point to a satisfying end to the Skywalker franchise, and 'Rey' actress Daisy Ridley herself said the show would have a better ending than Game of Thrones (pretty low bar to clear).

It seems we are also getting more 'C-3PO' in the movie, the trailer hinted as much, and the actor, playing '3PO,' Anthony Daniels, said he was happy with how his character was portrayed compared to becoming a window dressing for The Last Jedi.

So, all signs are pointing to a satisfying and happy ending to a saga, which started back in the late 70s. With George Lucas getting his inputs and J.J. Abrams coming back to direct, we are more than excited for 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,' which will make its way to the theatres on 20 December 2019.
