Cheryl Burke Files For Divorce From Husband Matthew Lawrence: Inside the Couple's Short-Lived Marriage

A dancer, television host, and model, Cheryl Burke is best known as one of the professional dancers on ABC's Dancing with the Stars. Burke has set quite the record on the fan-favorite dancing show; she is the first female professional to win the show and first to win it consecutively. Burke and her husband, Matthew Lawrence, actor, and singer, go way back to 2006 when the pair started dating. Lawrence, 42, is best known for his roles in Boy Meets the World, Brotherly Love, and Angels in the Endzone. Burke, 37, has called it quits on her two years of marriage with Lawrence and has filed for divorce.

 As claimed by the pro dancer herself, Burke's professional and personal life has always been an open book, and even as her private life delved into crisis, Cheryl didn't keep it concealed. Taking to her Instagram story, Burke wrote, "I know I have always said that I'm an open book with you guys, I do strive to be, and in writing this I've realized there isn't really an easy way to announce that my marriage is ending."

The Dancing With the Stars pro explains, "I hope you can understand that I will not be commenting any further at this time and am asking for understanding and privacy." Burke further thanked her fans for their love and support. As per court documents obtained exclusively by People, the celebrity dance filed for divorce on February 18 at a Los Angeles courthouse. The reason behind their separation is cited as "irreconcilable differences."

While Burke continues to share insight on her marriage and separation, her now-estranged husband, Lawrence, in contrast, isn't speaking his mind, leading fans to speculate that the actor might have taken the split harder. Cheryl recently visited her wedding venue in California to reflect on everything going on in her life.

Posting a string of pictures, the model/dancer wrote, "Taking a few days alone to focus inward, reflect and try to feel my feelings -with my partner in crime of course," referring to her French bulldog, Ysabella. In another post, Burke talked about processing the divorce and tumultuous time by facing it. Although the couple's marriage lasted a little over two years, Burke and Lawrence's relationship goes way back to 2006.

Burke and Lawrence's paths crossed when the Boy Meets the World star's brother, the actor/musician Joey Lawrence, competed on the ABC's dance competition in 2006. The spark between the pair may or may not have sparked then and there, but the confirmation came only a year later, in 2007.

Cheryl and Matthew, who were fresh faces and on the onset of their showbiz career, with Burke taking over the DWTS stage with celebrities like Ian Ziering Wayne Newton, while Lawrence starred in The Comebacks; the duo seemingly had a tough time keeping their relationship intact ahead of their busy schedule. The pair quietly called it quits after a year of dating in 2008.

The long-estranged pair surprised many when they rekindled their romance after almost ten years in February 2017. An insider reported, "I've never seen Cheryl so happy and so at peace. Matt is a wonderful presence in her life, and I can see this being it for her."The pair got engaged a year later in May 2018, and walked down the aisle exactly a year later at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar in San Diego.
