Lord Varys Actor Conleth Hill Wants Blame to be Put Someplace Else when it comes to the Coffee Cup Debacle
Conleth Hill who played Lord Varys in Game of Thrones said he is not going to be the fall guy for the coffee cup debacle in the final season of the series.
In the third episode of 'Game of Thrones' season 8, 'The Long Night,' the biggest complaint was the lighting of the episode where most people were not able to see what was happening on screen. But what happened next in the fourth episode of the final season was even more egregious than the lighting debacle.
After the battle for the living in Winterfell was over, the characters sat down to drink and enjoy their victory while they decide to go march into King’s Landing to oust 'Cersei' from power. But eagle-eyed viewers of the show spotted something which was simply unforgivable; there was a coffee cup in front of the seat of 'Daenerys' in the scene, and soon after, the internet was ablaze with anger and meme of the coffee cup debacle.

There was obviously someone who left the paper cup on the table, but the thing is no one was coming out to take the blame for the gaffe. But when Emilia Clarke was on Jimmy Fallon after the Emmy’s and the actress who player 'Daenerys' spilled the beans as to who is the person responsible for leaving the cup on the table.
When she was on the show, Emilia spoke about a conversation with a fellow castmate from the show, who she said took responsibility for the coffee cup. She said, “We had a party before the Emmys recently and Conleth, who plays Varys, who's sitting next to me in that scene, he pulls me aside, and he's like, 'Emilia, I have got to tell you something, love. The coffee cup was mine.’”

So, there it is, clear as the sunlight in a cloudless morning during the summer, Conleth Hill was responsible for putting the coffee cup there in the first place. Well, not to clear as it seems because the Varys actor denies his involvement in the whole situation.
The actor was on Channel 4’s show Sunday Bruch when he fielded the question about the whole situation. The answer he gave was in direct contradiction with the one Emilia said she got. The Varys actor said, “I would need to have had Mr. Man arms to leave a coffee cup there. I took a bullet for Emilia Clarke, and she touted on me. You know, there's no proof that I did it. So accuse away!”

The actor finally said he was not going to speak about the situation anymore and quipped he is going to lawyer up. “I'm just not making any comments until I have a lawyer ... It definitely wasn't product placement!” the actor laughed off the whole thing.
We are still not at the point where we can make light about the situation of the final season of 'Game of Thrones,' which was an utter mess when you ask almost all the fan base. The series was rushed even with the two years’ worth of time the creators of the show took to finish the whole thing.

The drop off in quality was there for all to see, season seven felt rushed, but there were story beats people could get behind, but it wasn’t the case for the final season. Maybe the creators of the show were rushing the whole thing so they can move on to other projects (they recently signed a $200 million exclusive contract with Netflix). Maybe it was Star Wars they were eager to get into, but considering the fact they left the project so soon after getting on board in 2018, we doubt it was the reason.
At the end of the day, the whole thing comes down to sheer incompetence in part of the two people entrusted to bring out a pleasing end to the beloved series. The coffee cup in the middle of the set signifies the lack of interest from the overseer of the series. The fact a paper coffee cup on the main table was invisible to the creators, shows how blind they both were to the glaring hole in the story of the final season of 'Game of Thrones' season 8.
