What Can We Expect From 'The Lighthouse' Starring Willem Dafoe And Robert Pattinson?

After months of pent-up anticipation, the trailer for 'The Lighthouse' is finally here and it is as good as advertised!

For two weeks we’ve been hearing rave reviews from critics who saw 'The Lighthouse' at the Cannes Film Festival. Four years we’ve waited for Robert Eggers to bring something new to the screen after the scary and amazing 'The Witch'. Finally, the trailer for the show arrived on YouTube, and it is like rubbing salt on our wounds now.

All the people who already saw the movie are saying nothing but good things about the film, and now we understand why just by looking at the trailer. We want to see the film right now, the trailer is soo compelling we want to see the movie right away. So, let’s break it down what we see in the trailer and what we can expect from ‘The Lighthouse.’

The first thing we see when we dive into the trailer is The Lighthouse on top of an ominous-looking rock. Then the scene switches to a one-shot of William Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, and we also see a ship in the distance. The first voice we hear is of Dafoe when he says, “Tell me, what’s a timberman want with being a wickie?” To which Pattinson replies, “Just lookin’ to earn a living, just like any man. Startin new,” and Dafoe retorts, “On the run.” It sets the tone for the whole trailer where we see William and Robert slowly lose their sanity on the deserted and scary looking rock.

The black and white clip is enveloped by eerie sounding music which raises some hairs at the back of your neck. Then William keeps repeating the same phrase, “Why’d ya spill yer beans,” which sounds like William is accusing Robert of something.

Then we see a series of images, we see what looks like a grave, tiptoeing through the lighthouse, binge drinking, battle high seas, and adverse climates, dancing like crazy people, also a woman is drowning in the sea, if that all wasn’t weird, there is an octopus type of creature hanging from the ceiling, strangling Robert, as he takes a swing at someone on the ground. We see them fighting, sitting huddled together, and it is all utterly confusing. We expected the movie by Robert Eggers to touch little surreal moments, but it seems he outdid even himself in this film.

As the clip nears the end, we see both of them start to lose time. Dafoe asks, “How long have we been on this rock? Five weeks? Two days? Help me to recollect.”

The viewers can expect two people, facing grueling conditions, which lead them to insanity. There are some surreal moments, but as Dafoe said in an interview, this movie is, “a little like Hitchcock.” So, people can expect some Hitchcock level of intrigue and scare.

The trailer arrived now, but the hype arrived way before the trailer. Besides, the movie is still a long way away from its release date. A24, who is handling the distribution of the film in the USA are currently holding the 18 October date, so we are still almost 80 days away from the release, till then the trailer needs to be enough for all of us.
