David Foster Says He "Enjoys Being a Dad" at 72: Inside the Musician's Conjugal Life

David Foster has been married five times: The Canadian musician is a father to seven children!  

A veteran musician, composer, record producer, and music executive, David Foster's multi-faceted career spans over five decades, in which he has earned 16 Grammys and 47 nominations. Foster's production from the early 70s includes his first hit, Wildflower, from the time when he was a member of the pop group Skylark, followed by other hitmakers like She's a Beauty, After the Love Has Gone and more.  

Born on November 1, 1949, in Victoria, British Columbia, David Walter Foster's early career kicked off with the legendary Chuck Berry. David later joined the Skylark as a keyboardist. Foster's life isn't just defined by his ever-green hits and exemplary career but the musician's perpetual interest in dating and his "not so secretive" penchant for hobbling from one marriage to another. At 71, Foster welcomed his youngest child.  

David Foster's fifth wife, Katharine McPhee!  

The veteran musician was a father of five daughters until February 2021, when he welcomed a son with his fifth wife, Katharine McPhee and became a father of six. McPhee, 37, is a singer-songwriter and actress. Her hitmakers include Had it All, Over It. McPhee has acting credits in The House Bunny, Shark Night 3D, and Scorpion. Before Foster, Katharine was married to Nick Cokas.

Foster met McPhee when she was a contestant on season five of American Idol in 2006. Katharine finished the competition as a runner up to Taylor Hicks, but mind we say, the real prize was Foster, who she went on to work with and eventually tied the knots. Foster produced McPhee's first single, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, in 2006 and serenaded on her wedding to actor Cokas.

McPhee ended her alliance with Cokas in 2014, and a year later, Foster's marriage with his fourth wife, Yolanda Hadid, also ended. Call it a mere coincidence or a premeditated measure, but the musician and McPhee's dating rumors spread like wildfire around the same time. The rumored lovebirds continued to be pictured together yet didn't confirm the speculation still. After years of hush-hush romance, they made their relationship official at Met Gala in 2018.

Foster and McPhee announced their engagement in July 2018 and tied the knots in June 2019 at Church of St. Yeghiche in the South Kensington district of London. "Exactly 13 years ago today, my very first single, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, was released right after Idol," McPhee wrote while posting a snippet of her glamourous wedding; she adds, "Today I'm marrying the man who produced it. Life is full of beautiful coincidences."

The Grammy-winning musician recently debuted on the Las Vegas Strip. He kicked off the performance with his songs Snowbirds, Winter Games and such, and his singer wife also joined him on stage. Reveling in being a veteran in the industry, Foster says, "I found a niche, it's working, and I love it."Giving a glimpse of his marital life, which people often scoff at due to the couple's 32 years of an age difference, Foster says, "it makes no difference to them." The musician raves about being a father to a toddler at 72.

Foster had his first child, Allison Jones Foster, now 51, when he was only 20. He placed Allison for adoption and bonded with her when she turned 30, and Foster had also made a name for himself. Allison is now the director of The David Foster Foundation, which supports children in need of medical transplants.  

 Foster's fourth wife, Yolanda Hadid, said he got impatient with her after her Lyme disease diagnosis.

David's first wife was singer and writer B.J. Cook. They share one daughter, Amy Skylark Foster, 48, songwriter and author. After Cook, the musician walked down the aisle with Rebecca Dyer in 1982, and after welcoming three daughters, Sara Foster, Erin Foster, and Jordan Foster, they ended their marriage in 1986.

Foster's third marriage was with songwriter Linda Thompson. They were married for over a decade, from 1991 to 2005, but surprisingly bore no children in the period. After his third divorce, the producer started dating Yolanda Hadid and married her in 2011.  

After the former couple's nine years of romance and four years of marriage, they announced their separation in 2015. Hadid famously called out the Grammy-winner in her book, Believe Me: My Battle With the Invisibility of Lyme Disease, for abandoning her after she was diagnosed with the disease.
