Facts about American-South African actress Embeth Davidtz famed for Schindler's List and Ray Donovan

Embeth Davidtz made the world stand up and take notice in 1993 when the movie Schindler’s List was released. The film made over $300 million at the box office and won seven Academy Awards, but the movie was such a harrowing experience because of the acting in the film.

The talented actress found success as an actress, but she also faced many uphill battles. Most prominent of them all would be Embeth and her battle with cancer. Embeth Davidtz is a Breast Cancer Survivor

The actress was not lighting the world on fire with her diverse acting roles. But Embeth Davidtz performed well for the part she was asked to play while making the best of her opportunities. Embeth’s career came to a screeching halt when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Embeth only revealed she had breast cancer while doing the press for Ray Donovan. She appeared in seven episodes of the hit Showtime series. Davidtz was required to do a nude scene in the movie, which resulted in the actress asking the writers to include her partially-reconstructed right breast.

The American actress revealed she stopped all her work in 2013. In 2013, Embeth got a mastectomy to root out cancer and had surgery to reconstruct her breast.

Embeth Davidtz was Born in America, Raised in South Africa

Embeth Davidtz's parents, John and Jean, lived in the United States while her father studied at Purdue University to become a chemical engineer. She was born on 11 August 1965 in Lafayette, Indiana, while her father was still at the University.

The entire family soon moved to New Jersey, but the pull of home was too much to ignore, and the family of three relocated to South Africa. Embeth was only nine years old at the time of the move. She finished high school as were as her college education in South Africa.

Because of all the moving, she became proficient in English, French, and Afrikaans, which came in handy in school.

Embeth Davidtz was Hand-Picked by Steven Spielberg for the Role of Helen Hirsch in Schindler’s List

Embeth Davidtz showed what it was like as a helper inside the Nazi living quarters for officers by proxy of her. We saw the brutality of a SS soldier and how the people in Poland did not mean a thing to the Nazi soldiers. After the Army of Darkness, this was only her second movie, and to say she was a standout performer is an understatement.

The appearance in Schindler’s List played a pivotal role in Embeth’s career, and she is still famous for her appearance in the movie. Though she’s been in multiple diverse projects, nothing will be more haunting and scary than her appearance in Steven Spielberg’s magnum opus. She also appeared as one of the Shepherd sisters in Grey's Anatomy.

After finishing college, she started her passion for acting in the late 80s. Her first job was at Cape Performing Arts Board at the age of 21 in Cape Town, and she only appeared in small productions here and there. 

But fate would have it, Steven Spielberg saw the movie Nag van die Nehentiende, and she caught the eye of the director. Spielberg hired the actress based on her performance in the film, and it was the right decision.

Embeth Davidtz’s Past Affairs and Married Life with Her Husband

While her career was taking off, Embeth Davidtz found herself in the middle of some high-profile relationships with established actors. Embeth and Harvey Keitel were together for an extended period, and she was also in a relationship with Ben Chaplin for a few years.

Relationships and affairs aside, she found the love of her life and wedded her husband, Jason Sloane, on 22 June 2002. Jason is an entertainment attorney, and their wedding was a Jewish affair. The couple is also the parents of daughter Emily, born in 2002, and son, Asher, born in 2005.
