Best known for headlining some of the best 90s shows and flicks like Martin, which has now turned 30, What's Happening Now, Bad Boys, Nothing to Lose, and Blue Streak, Martin Lawrence is rightly regarded as a comedy trailblazer. Lawrence's once burgeoning career may have taken a back seat since the transformation in industry intrinsics, but regardless, Lawrence will always be a generational icon and a pioneer.

Martin Fitzgerald Lawrence was born on April 16, 1965, in Frankfurt, West Germany. He grew up in Washington, D.C., as an ardent boxer and even excelled in the sport at one point before a coinciding penchant for comedy took over young Martin. Lawrence delved into stand-up comedy while juggling many odd jobs to make ends meet. In the first five years of his comedy career, Lawrence became a member of The Improv and appeared in a few shows.

During the initial years, Martin would frequent the stand-up circuit in his native; on one such gig in Washington DC, Lawrence came across comedian Ritch Snyder, who convinced the aspiring comedian to try his luck in New York. Heeding Synder's advice, Lawrence relocated to New York and landed himself a spot in The Improv. Lawrence was one of the finalists in the talent search tv show Star Search.

Credited for boosting several African-American stand-up comedians, including Chris Tucker, Dave Chappelle, and Mike Epps, Lawrence, too, experienced an upgrade after the show. The comedian would land his own eponymous sitcom Martin on Fox, which ran successfully for five seasons from 1992 to 1997. While starring in the enormously successful sitcom, Lawrence also attracted bad press and rep for his insensitive remarks and a lawsuit from his co-star Tisha Campbell, who accused the comedian of sexual assault on and off the set of Martin.
