He suffered a fatal leg injury whilst playing for the Washingtons, an accident that nearly got his leg amputated. Following 16 major surgeries and long rehabilitation, Smith made his comeback in 2020, which stunned everyone.  

After showing the world, his vigor with his remarkable comeback, the 37 years old announced his retirement. Alex took to his Instagram and broke the news in a short clip.

He said although he knows there are greater milestones destined for him, if he keeps going, he'd rather focus on spending time with his family from now on.

Alex ended the clip by saying, "I’m going to take a little time to enjoy a few of those walks with my wife. And my kids have no idea what’s coming for them in the backyard.”
