Zac Efron's name was mentioned as the actor playing Adam Warlock and James Gunn was having none of that.
Let’s be honest, 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' was nowhere near the caliber of the first movie, but that is not to say the sophomore 'Guardians' movie was a dud. It was an enjoyable flick with great character building, but the separating of the team undid the whole of the first movie where they were putting the team together in the first place.
There were some standout moments in the second Guardians movie, 'Peter' and 'Gamora' romance, considering the consequences of 'Avengers: Endgame,' their romance was even more heartbreaking and cuter. 'Drax' and Mantis' friendship was also amazing to see, the two awkward beings trying to interact with each other made for some hilarious moments.

But the biggest revelation about the movie came in the end credit scene when a beaten and battered 'Ayesha,' of the Sovereign race, creates a being in her room to kill the 'Guardians.' 'Ayesha' named the being Adam and then began the speculation among fans about the imminent arrival of 'Adam Warlock.'
'Adam Warlock' is one of the most beloved characters in the Marvel comic books, and his hand in the 'Infinity Saga' of the comics was huge. So, fans were thinking the character would be introduced in Infinity War and come to his own in the final movie. But it never happened, Adam Warlock was nowhere to be seen, and the Infinity Saga happened without the character even making a single appearance.

The writers of the final to Avengers movies later said they never were thinking of including Adam Warlock. Stephen McFeely said, “The logic right here was to honor the MCU as how it had already existed and the characters you'd already fallen in love with. We did not want to give too much story space to introducing a whole new person. It would rob you from somebody.”
They are definitely correct, except for the core audience of the comics no one even got a clue who Adam Warlock is supposed to be and making him the focal point of the final movie would’ve been a mistake. The 22 movie MCU saga was about the original Avenger of the MCU getting their due on screen, and taking away from them with a celestial being would’ve been a massive misstep.

But just because Adam Warlock did not show up in any of the MCU movies since Guardians 2 doesn’t mean the speculations died down. Fans were self casting actors into the role, and the rumor mill was also churning, from Keanu Reeves to Robert Pattinson, everyone was associated with the character.
Well, recently, there was another rumor going around Hollywood where Zac Efron was supposedly getting the role. But the director of the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' movies was having none of the rumors.

When a fan mentioned the casting of Zac, James replied, “I never even said there was going to be an Adam Warlock. And NO ONE has been cast in Vol 3 except the actors already in the movies.” So people wanting to ask the director of Suicide Squad about the casting of Adam Warlock, simple answer, don’t!
