"She gave me complete permission to be myself and to be proud of my queerness. It was a form of expression, but it was also weirdly a form of protection."
"Last year, when I changed my pronouns and really spoke out about my gender expression and my gender fluidity, I started falling in love with makeup all over again. I've always felt the way I felt. When I changed my pronouns, things got complicated for sure," admitted Smith. "I felt a need to be presenting — all the time. It took time; it took real-time."
Finally, Sam said,
"I've had to just go into myself and try and deal with it in a really kind way and patience, and just know that everyone's working on this. It's going to take time. We're changing a language here."
