Tommy Dorfman recently reintroduced herself as a queer person. Her preferred pronouns are She/Her. The actress is best known for playing Ryan Shaver on the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why. In her interview with Time, Dorfman said, "for a year now, and I have been privately identifying as a woman- a trans woman."  

Dorfman was born on May 13, 1992, in Atlanta, Georgia. Also a writer, photographer, and director, she has been in the industry since 2009. Her credits include In My Skin, Insatiable, Jane the Virgin, Love, Victor, and i-Witness. Along with her new identity, Tommy and her husband have decided to redefine their relationship. Tommy Dorfman And Peter Zurkunhlen Married Life

Tommy Dorfman tied the knot with her long-time boyfriend, Peter Zurkuhlen, in November 2016. The pair were thought to be another gay couple, and so felt the duo themselves. But Dorfman revealed their relationship evolved a lot ever since she discovered herself as a trans.  

 Dorfman has been privately living as a trans for over a year now.

In conversation with Time, Dorfman said, “I was in a nine-year relationship in which I was thought of as a more male-bodied person, with a gay man. I love him so much, but we’ve been learning that as a trans woman, what I’m interested in is not necessarily reflected in a gay man."

Dorfman's husband, Peter, used to work as a real estate agent. He is the founder of a tech company called ChipChop Systems. Zurkuhlen is also chief of staff at 'Get Help,' a health care platform. Dorfman met his life partner a couple of years before he got his break.

 Tommy and her former husband are redefining their relationship as friends. 

The 13 Reasons Why star had revealed they met at a house party organized by a mutual friend. Tommy and Peter got engaged in 2015. With Dorfman identifying as trans, she said they both have pledged to redefine their relationship. "So, we've had incredible conversations to redefine our relationship as friends," said Tommy.

As the 13 Reasons Why star took the brave step, her husband played her biggest cheerleader. Peter wrote, "So much love. You are gorgeous and you are fully you," posting a candid picture of Tommy from her interview, he further adds, "Proud of you T." Dorfman doesn't want people to view the revelation as a grand reveal. The Insatiable alum quotes, "Coming out is always viewed as this grand reveal, but I was never not out," Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Marc Jacobs, and Brandon Flynn are a few names among many who've been plauding Tommy's revelation.

Dorfman is set to direct the upcoming I Wish You All the Best. She is done playing male roles. The actress/writer revealed she is set to play her first female role, and she couldn't be more excited. Dorfman will play a female part in the upcoming film Sharp Stick.  

Are They Separated?

Tommy Dorfman and Peter Zurkuhlen are no longer together. In an interview in July 2021, Tommy revealed that she and her spouse are no longer together but remain good friends.

The Love in the Time of Corona star said, "The types of romantic partnerships I seek out are different." Dorfman still occasionally shares snapshots with her former partner.
